Watching movies alphabetically

How our alphabetical movie nights evolved over four rounds.

The question What do we watch? is a tough one to answer, so we decided to break out of our self-established, comfortable filter bubble and watch movies alphabetically. What started as a fun constraint for a single movie night turned into a loose tradition that we revisited a couple of times. Here is how each round played out.

Round I – establishing the rules

The first run-through set the tone: pick a letter, find a movie, and stick with the choice. The novelty of the format made it easy to keep going, even though some letters (hello, X) required compromises.

Round II – refining the approach

For the second round, we kept the rules but allowed ourselves to skip Q and X because we simply could not find something we wanted to watch for those letters. Only a few films left a lasting impression, yet the overall exercise remained entertaining enough to plan another round.

Round III – numbers join the alphabet

Curiosity led us to expand the experiment by including titles that start with the numbers 0 through 9. The change brought a slightly more varied selection and a handful of memorable discoveries. This round convinced us that the format still had life left in it.

Round IV – keeping it casual

By the fourth iteration we relaxed the schedule and filled the gaps between alphabetical picks with other movies. The alphabetical selection strategy still worked as a prompt whenever we felt indecisive, but it no longer dictated every movie night.
